Welcome at Rummy Circle

Rummy is a very famous card game that is known to be not only based on luck but also on skills. The game is entirely legal in India (except for a few states) because of the fact that it needs skills to be played. People like to play this game in online casinos and earn money. The game can even be played in family gatherings, and Indians love to play this fun game during marriage ceremonies. The game gained massive popularity in the United States, and then many other countries adopted it and made their own variations. However, the exact origin of this game remains in shadows.

How many types of variations ?

There are many different variations of rummy. The thing is, anyone can make a variation of it. That is why there is no actual number of how many variations of rummy is out there. However, if we only count the popular ones that we find in online casinos, the number is around 20. Let’s look at some of the popular variations of rummy.

13 Card Rummy

13 Card rummy is also known as Indian Rummy. Two to six players can play this version of rummy with 13 cards in hand. There is a valid usage of joker cards in the replacement of any other cards. Face cards and aces have 10 points, and the joker is counted as 0. This game also has three different variations. They are Deals Rummy, Points Rummy, and Pool Rummy.

Gin Rummy

Favourite to Europeans, gin rummy is probably the easiest version of the card game. Only two players can play it, and each player is given ten cards to make a set of a run. Ace is considered low and has a value of 1 while the king has the highest points.

Oklahoma Rummy

It originated from gin rummy. But unlike gin rummy, this can be played between not only two but three of four players. For two-player, ten cards are dealt. If there are more players, then only seven cards are given to each player. The face cards have 10 points while the ace is counted as 1

500 Rummy

500 rummy is also called Michigan rummy or Pinochle rummy. The game can be played between two to eight people. This is an interesting version of rummy because, in most rummy games, points are counted as a negative value. But when it comes to 500 rummy, the player who reaches 500 points first wins the game. Joker has 15 points in 500 rummy while ace is again considered as 1 point.

Where it came from

There is no exact data that can prove the invention of rummy. The game has been practised for centuries now, and a lot of countries have their own variant of it that are more or less similar to the actual game. According to popular beliefs, rummy was an evolution of the game called ‘Conquian’ which is a game that is known to have originated in Spain or Mexico. It spread in America supposedly in the 19th century. However, another theory claims that rummy was a developed version of the game called ‘Mahjong’ which originated in China about a thousand years ago. Apart from these two assumptions, there are several more popular beliefs that tell the story of the origin of rummy.

Glossary & terms

Before you play rummy, it is very important to learn the terms. The terms are used during online games and without knowing them, you are in a risk of losing money. The terms are not very hard to understand. You just have to remember the names. After that, you will be ready for a game. Let’s have a look at some of the most important terms of rummy:
Deal :Deal is a term referred to the dealing of cards to the players. This is done by shuffling the cards well and providing each player 13 cards. Dealing is done after the toss. Dealing is amongst the first process of rummy.
Closed and Open Deck : Players take cards from the discard pile in order to make a sequence. The process of taking a card from the discard deck is called a ‘draw.’ When a player draws a card, he/she needs to put down a card on the discarded pile. This process is called ‘discard.’
Discard and Draw :Discarded piles are deck of cards from where the players can take a card to complete their runs and sets. The open deck is the set of discarded cards facing up. On the other hand, the cards facing down are called closed decks.
Meld and Show : Meld and show are the winning processes. When you have found a winning sequence, you need to arrange them. This is called mending. You have to arrange the cards by value if they are from the same suit. Otherwise, melding is not required. Then you can ‘show’ the card in order to be the winner of a rummy game.

Paper Joker : Paper joker is not actually the joker card. When a card is randomly picked from the closed deck, it is considered as the paper joker. It is also called ‘cut joker.’ These cards become the joker for a specific game when picked up from the deck.
